Bathroom Renovation Introduction | Guest Bath

Who’s ready for some bathroom renovations? I hope you are because we have three, yes three, bathrooms to tackle. And in this post, we’re going to look at the first one; the guest bath transformation.

This bathroom came the furthest in terms of transformation because well, it didn’t start out as a bathroom. It should have been a bathroom but the original owners decided to turn this space into a laundry room instead.

Laundry or Bath? Bath!

Now I get the convenience of having a laundry room on the same floor as the bedrooms but leaving this space as a laundry room meant there would ultimately be only one bathroom for three bedrooms upstairs and no master suite.

We absolutely saw more value in adding another bathroom for guest use even if it meant sacrificing the convenience of the laundry location. Plumbing already existed down in the basement for a laundry so it made a lot of sense to us to move the laundry to the basement. Warren had already added a cool retro laundry chute to get the clothes down to the basement, which worked for me!

Keeping It Old-School

Early in the house renovation project, we knew that we wanted to highlight the existing character throughout the house while adding additional character where we could. We wanted to carefully select finishes that would maintain a look of an older home that had been updated. Even though our house wasn’t that old; it looked older than it was because of all it’s old-house character.

When it came to picking out flooring for the bathrooms, we knew that we wanted a more retro/classic look. Traditional black and white tiles completely met those requirements! We also decided that we wanted all three bathrooms to have the same tile to provide a little continuity in the overall design of the home.

Keeping It Consistent

The other decisions we made to provide continuity throughout the bathrooms were to incorporate the same paint colors, natural wood accents, and old windows (yeah, old windows) into the design.

This would be a three-quarter bath with a nicely sized shower, an antique dresser upcycled into a bathroom vanity, and an awesome antique cabinet I found at a nearby antique store.

Since this bathroom and the master bath would both have showers that we were going to design from scratch, we needed to figure out the style of the enclosures. Sticking with the concept of a newer house that looked much older, we decided to use partial walls, shower curtains, and salvaged windows to create the enclosures. And if I’m being completely honest, we were now towards the end of a WHOLE-house renovation. There were a ton of projects to fund throughout the renovation and creating a shower enclosure that did not include large sheets of expensive glass (which I hate to clean anyway) was definitely our top choice! Give me a shower curtain that I can launder regularly and I’m a happy gal, just throw it down the chute! I know some folks think shower curtains are a bit old school but that was just one more reason why we liked them!

The guest bath ended up being exactly what we wanted it to be. A comfortable space for our guests, a charming cohesively designed space within the house, and a way for us to have a private master bath! Win, win, win!

Exactly What We Needed!

Up until now, we had no other shower in the house. That means nothing but baths for nearly two years! This bathroom felt like a real luxury at this point in our lives. Plus, we would have another fully functioning bathroom while we tore apart the master bath for its renovation. We’ll head over to that project in the next post.
