Exterior Transformation: New Roof

Look at those skies! Now that’s a brave crew!

Once the contractor found a crew brave enough to install the new roof (read about crew #1 and their fear of heights here; yeah, roofers with a fear of heights, that’s a thing), the roofing project could officially begin.

Nails Are Forever!

If you’ve ever had a new roof installed then you know what a mess it makes. The contractor promises to carefully go over your property with a magnet to remove wayward nails and clean everything up. So while the mess is being made, you think they have it all under control. Old roofing materials (and nails) are flying every which direction, but it’s okay (I kept telling myself, they’re going to over the property with a magnet)! Four years later, I am still picking up both roofing and siding nails all over the place, but I guess they tried, right?

They also tell you the new roof will go up much faster than it ever will. We do have a pretty complicated roof though, so I suppose it could have been worse. But every little delay of the roofing meant a delay for the new siding project as well.

The Tale of Two Projects

At one point, all of the siding materials were delivered to the house, only to be picked up a few days later because the roofing was so delayed. And even when the new roof was done, the siding had to wait because now the siding contractor had moved onto other projects.

So we had siding materials delivered twice. At least the second time around, I was pretty sure the work would soon commence, and it did. More on siding in the next post. For now the exterior transformation was already beginning to emerge and we could begin to see what a huge transformation it was going to be.

Every Little Step, An Improvement

Just getting the ugly red shingles off the roof was an improvement. Getting a peek at the finished roof was providing us with some much needed encouragement to trudge forward with the many additional projects that we had on our plates.

Finally, a new roof befitting of the Young Victorian’s true beauty; doesn’t she already look better?

Not Done, But Already Better!
