Who likes thistles? Anyone? Eeyore likes them, bees like them; I don’t like them! And I feel quite confident in that statement because I’ve been battling thistles and other nasty weeds around our property for 4 years now. I feel like I’m slowly winning the war but that may just be wishful thinking.
During the summer, I’m out on the property almost every week pulling thistles. Warren helps the process by mowing the entire property 2-3 times a summer. But these nasty weeds grow so fast, and so much faster than the natural grass that grows here. I have to pull the thistles by hand to get rid of them; it doesn’t make sense to mow them every week because they’re so spread out. Sometimes, I have to run around and just pull off the flower heads before they have a chance to go to seed. There’s just so many of them that it’s not feasible for me to pull them all out by their roots but I try to make a dent each year!
We have just under 2 acres of land so it is a constant battle to try and stay ahead of the weeds. The property, like the house, had not been maintained by the original owners for years, so other than the area right around the house, everything was waste deep (or taller) and the thistles were having a party everywhere!
I try to keep up with thistle removal because they’re so darned ornery and scratchy and I hate for the grandkids to have to deal with them when they play in the yard. But I also hate to have our nuisance weeds blowing seeds into our neighbors’ yards. Most of our neighbors maintain their properties and work to keep them weed-free and so I really don’t want to be “that” neighbor!
I dream of the day when I’m only having to pull a thistle here and there! And I will get there, I’m determined! Sometimes I feel like I’m losing the battle but ultimately, I will win the war!
Kitchen cabinets are coming next! But not before we would experience a significant loss. See you next time; thanks for reading!
Blessings,
